Chedrauileaks.org is an independent, critical website sponsored by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents some 1.3 million members in the United States and Canada working primarily in the grocery, retail, food processing and meatpacking industries.
Four of our locals in California represent approximately 600 workers in seven (7) El Super stores. El Super is owned by Bodega Latina Corporation, a subsidiary of Grupo Comercial Chedraui, S.A.B de C.V., a major supermarket chain in Mexico, whose majority owners are various members of the Chedraui family.
The UFCW local unions and Bodega Latina Corporation are currently in negotiations for a new contract for their members in the seven stores in California. During this struggle the company has committed unfair labor practices in violation of federal labor law. In addition, a hearing officer with the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) has found that the company violated state wage and hour laws; the company has appealed that decision.”
A coalition of community groups and UFCW local unions are conducting an active boycott of selected El Super stores in California (www.boycottelsuper.org).
While engaged in organizing or bargaining the UFCW staff thoroughly research companies. Doing so helps us to better represent our members.
In researching Grupo Comercial Chedraui and its officers and directors we have discovered many interesting things which we have decided to share with a larger audience. We have noticed that the media in Mexico contains very little information about the business dealings and personal assets in the United States of what could be termed – Mexican elites, wealthy business people and politicians. It is also clear from our initial research that the Chedraui family and its many branches are deeply connected throughout the Mexican business and political communities.
Nearly all of our information will be based on official documents available from various government entities throughout the United States.
